3 of hearts

hmm... my brother is obsessed with magic tricks and cards... i love him to death, but does he ALWAYS have to practice the same tricks over and over and over again on me? i almost know all of his secrets, i'll just pick up the deck in the middle of his trick and play it right back on him. do you have a favourite card? mine's always been the 3 of hearts. dunno why, but i always end up picking it randomly out of the deck when he holds them face down and says "pick a card, any card," to start out the slight of hand masterpiece. i even had a necklace at one point with a tiny 3 of hearts card that i made out of clay. random, yes, but hey, it just keeps turning up!!

The Three of Hearts

Shuffled and bridged with a
rat-tat-tat and the edges flap together,
the deck of cards is cut and held in palm.
The magician holds it out to the mark,
grinning ear to ear, deception cunningly hidden in his eyes.
"Pick a card, any card..." drips like syrup from his drawling mouth,
melting over my ears and sticking between my fingers
as I reach to the fanned deck of red and blue printed angels.
The three of hearts turns itself up in my hand,
bright and shining, the trio of red hearts laughing and glinting on the smooth card,
I conceal it behind my curled fingers.
"Now," broods the wolf with foxlike mind, "pick two more..."
He draws me in. I cannot stop now. I pick two more cards with my other hand.
Careful now, your palms are sweaty, don't let him see the first card, why are you breathing so hard? This is all a trick.
One from the top and another from the middle, the queen of hearts and jack of spades. What a pull.
But wait... the jack of spades. Jack of all trades... has two faces.
The right-side-up seems to have the face of a king, robes emblazoned with the suit of hearts,
and to the up-side-down, the face of the jack of spades, rightfully named, but with an odd expression.
Like a joke gone wrong, the printed prankster's grin has turned to a grimmace.
This jester's bested at his own game.
